Modal Verbs and Their Meaning

What are modal verbs?

Modals (also called modal verbs, modal auxiliary verbs, modal auxiliaries) are special verbs which behave irregularly in English. They are different from normal verbs like "work, play, visit..." They are used to indicate modality. They give additional information about the function of the main verb that follows it. They have a great variety of communicative functions.

Modals (disebut juga kata kerja modal, kata kerja bantu modal) adalah kata kerja khusus yang berperilaku tidak beraturan dalam bahasa Inggris. Mereka berbeda dari kata kerja normal seperti "work, play, visit..." Mereka digunakan untuk menunjukkan modalitas. Mereka memberikan informasi tambahan tentang fungsi kata kerja utama yang mengikutinya. Mereka memiliki berbagai macam fungsi komunikatif.

Use of modal verbs:
Modal verbs are used to express functions such as:
  1. Permission / Izin
  2. Ability / Kemampuan
  3. Obligation / Keharusan
  4. Prohibition / Larangan
  5. Lack of necessity / Kurangnya kebutuhan
  6. Advice / Nasehat
  7. Possibility / Kemungkinan
  8. Probability / Kemungkinan
Remember

Modal verbs are followed by an infinitive without "to"
Kata kerja modal diikuti oleh infinitive tanpa "to"

Examples:
  • You must stop when the traffic lights turn red
  • You should see to the doctor
  • There are a lot of tomatoes in the fridge. You need not buy any.
Exception / Pengecualian

• You ought to go to the doctor.
