Task 10
Study the following patterns and examples.
  • As Nominal
The pattern:

( + ) S + To Be (is, am, are) + Non verb
( – ) S + To Be (is, am, are) + not + Non verb
( ? ) To Be (is, am, are) + S + Non verb + ?

Examples

( + ) He is a student.
( – ) He is not a student.
( ? ) Is he a student?
  • As Verbal
The pattern:

( + ) S + verb + s/es + O/C
( – ) S + do/does + not + verb + O/C
( ? ) Do/does + S + verb + O/C + ?

He, She, It → verb + s/es He, She, It → does
I, You, They, We → verb without s/es
I, You, They, We → do

Examples

( + ) She opens the door.
( – ) She does not open the door.
( ? ) Does she open the door?
  • The simple present is used:
  1. To give your opinion - I like ice cream. I don't like spicy food.
  2. To talk about schedules - The library opens at eight. It doesn't open at 7.
  3. To talk about daily habits (routine actions) - Sara eats a cheese for breakfast every day. She doesn't eat cereal.
  4. To give facts - The earth circles the sun. The moon doesn't circle the sun.
  • Adverb of time:
Every morning/day/week/month/year
Once, twice, three times, four times
  • Adverb of frequency:
Always, usually, sometimes, often, never, seldom.
